Holey Moley Hat Pattern
This is my version of the Messy Bun Hat. If you have any questions, just ask.
You’ll need worsted weight yarn and a 5.0mm/H crochet hook.
Chain 10.
Row 1: Working in the back loops only, sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and each chain across. (9 stitches).
Rows 2-71: Ch 1, working in the back loops only, sc across. (9 stitches).
Ch 1, working in the back loops only, slip stitch the two ends of the band together being careful not to twist.
Now it’s time to make the top of the hat:
Ch 1, sc in the same stitch that your last sl st to join the band was worked. Then sc in the end of each row around the hat and join with a sl st. (72 sc)
Rounds 1 & 2: Ch 2, dc around and join with a sl st. (72 dc)
Round 3: ch 2, [dc 10, dc2tog] around and join. (66 stitches)
Round 4: ch 2, dc around and join. (66 st)
Round 5: ch 2, [dc 9, dc2tog] around and join. (60 st)
Round 6: ch 2, dc around and join. (60 st)
Round 7: ch 2, [dc8, dc2tog] around and join. (54 st)
Round 8: ch 2, dc around and join. (54 st)
Round 9: ch2, [dc 7, dc2tog] around and join. (48 st)
Round 10: ch2, [dc6, dc2tog] around and join. (42 st)
Round 11: ch2, [dc5, dc2tog] around and join. (36 st)
Round 12: ch 2, [dc4, dc2tog] around and join. (30 st)
Finish off and weave in the ends.
If you want the hole for the bun to be bigger, just stop on round 11 and finish it off. If you want it smaller, work another round of decreases before finishing off.
To make the hat smaller for a child, work fewer rows in the band and adjust the decreases accordingly. You could also use a DK weight yarn and a smaller hook, maybe an F hook. I haven’t tested that, but it wouldn’t be too hard to try it out if you’re determined.
If you want to buy it, you can pick it up in my Etsy shop.
